IELTS Score Requirements: UK, Australia, Canada, USA Universities & Visas
Before you prepare for IELTS, you need to know exactly what score you are preparing for. Different universities, visa categories, and professions have different requirements — and component score requirements (minimum scores per skill) can be more demanding than overall score requirements.
This guide covers score requirements by destination and purpose.
How to Read IELTS Requirements
IELTS requirements are typically stated in two ways:
Overall band score: e.g., "IELTS 6.5 overall" — the average of all four skills.
Component requirements: e.g., "6.5 overall with no component below 6.0" — meaning you need 6.5 average AND every individual skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) must be at least 6.0.
Why component requirements matter: A candidate might average 6.5 overall but score 5.5 in Writing. If the requirement is "no component below 6.0," this candidate does not meet the requirement despite the overall score.
Always check both the overall and component requirements for your specific application.
UK Requirements
UK Universities
UK universities set their own IELTS requirements. General ranges:
Undergraduate:
- Lower-ranked universities: 5.5–6.0 overall
- Mid-ranked universities: 6.0–6.5 overall
- Russell Group (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh): 6.5–7.5 overall
Postgraduate:
- Research degrees (PhD): 6.5–7.0 overall, often with 6.5 minimum per component
- Taught masters: 6.0–7.0 overall depending on institution
Medical degrees: 7.0–7.5 overall, with 7.0 minimum in all components (Oxford, Cambridge, King's College London typically require 7.5)
IELTS for UKVI: Many UK university visa applications require IELTS for UKVI (a specific version tested at approved test centres). Check whether your university requires this.
UK Visa Requirements
Student Visa (Tier 4):
- Undergraduate: minimum Band 5.5 (some universities require higher)
- Postgraduate: minimum Band 5.5–6.0
- Must be IELTS Academic for UKVI
Skilled Worker Visa:
- Typically B1 English level (roughly IELTS 4.0–5.0)
- Can use IELTS Life Skills (speaking and listening only) or IELTS Academic/General Training
Global Talent Visa: No standardised IELTS requirement — assessed on endorsement
Settlement / ILR: Life in the UK Test required; English proficiency demonstrated via previous visa approval or exemption
Australia Requirements
Australian Universities
Undergraduate:
- Most universities: 6.0–6.5 overall
- Competitive courses (medicine, law, dentistry): 7.0 overall with 7.0 in all components
Postgraduate:
- General masters: 6.5 overall with 6.0 minimum components
- Group of Eight universities (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UNSW, Monash, Queensland, Western Australia, Adelaide): 6.5–7.0 overall
Australian Migration
General Skilled Migration (GSM) — Points-Based System: IELTS contributes to your points score:
| IELTS Score (all 4 components) | Points |
|---|---|
| Superior: 8+ in all 4 | 20 |
| Proficient: 7+ in all 4 | 10 |
| Competent: 6+ in all 4 | 0 (minimum to apply) |
Most competitive profiles need at least 10 points for English (Band 7.0+ in each component).
Employer-Sponsored Visa (TSS 482): Typically Band 5.0–5.5 for most occupations
Partner / Family Visa: Usually no IELTS requirement, but functional English may be assessed
Professional Registration in Australia
- Medicine (AMC): 7.5 overall, 7.0 minimum each component
- Nursing (AHPRA): 7.0 overall, 7.0 in each component
- Engineering (Engineers Australia): 6.0 overall
- Accounting (CPA, CAANZ): 6.5 overall with 6.0 minimum components
- Teaching: 7.5 overall with 7.5 in all components (in most states)
Canada Requirements
Canadian Universities
Undergraduate: 6.0–6.5 overall (most universities) Postgraduate: 6.5–7.0 overall
Major universities:
- University of Toronto: 6.5 overall, 6.5 in all components
- UBC, McGill, University of Alberta: 6.5–7.0 depending on faculty

Canadian Immigration
Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker Program): IELTS scores map to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. Points calculation:
| IELTS (lowest of 4 components) | CLB | CRS Points |
|---|---|---|
| 8.0+ in all | CLB 10 | 32 points |
| 7.0 in all | CLB 9 | 24 points |
| 6.0 in all | CLB 8 | 16 points |
| 5.0 in all | CLB 7 | 6 points |
Competitive CRS scores typically require CLB 9 (IELTS 7.0 in all four skills) for Express Entry draws.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Requirements vary by province. Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta have the most active PNPs. Many require CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 in all components) as minimum.
Atlantic Immigration Program, Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot: CLB 4–5 in some streams
Canadian Student Direct Stream: 6.0 overall for the direct processing path
USA Requirements
US institutions do not use a standardised IELTS requirement system — each university sets its own. Additionally, many US universities also accept TOEFL, so IELTS is not always the only option.
Undergraduate:
- State universities: 6.0–6.5 overall
- Competitive private universities (Ivy League, MIT, Stanford): 7.0–7.5+
Graduate:
- Most programmes: 6.5–7.0 overall
- MBA programmes at top business schools: 7.0–7.5
Medical Residencies: USMLE and other credentials typically take precedence over IELTS for international medical graduates, but some hospital systems require IELTS 7.0+

How to Calculate Your Target
- Identify your specific destination (university, visa category, professional body)
- Find the exact requirement on the institution's official website — do not rely on third-party sources
- Note both overall AND component requirements
- Add 0.5 as a buffer — aim for 0.5 above the minimum to account for variability
If your target is 7.0 overall, prepare to achieve 7.0–7.5 consistently in practice. This ensures that on test day, even a slightly below-peak performance still meets the requirement.
Action Checklist
- Confirm exact IELTS requirement from the official source (university, immigration department, professional body)
- Note both overall and component (per-skill) requirements
- Set your preparation target as 0.5 above the minimum requirement
- Take a diagnostic test to measure your current band in each skill
- Identify which skills need the most work to reach your target
- Start IELTS Sensei practice with your target band as the goal
